Global Tree is intended as a continually growing worldwide tree network. In each country that participates in the project a particular tree must be found which is significant for the cultural history of that country and at the same time has the characteristics of a network tree. The combinations of trees and countries (see also on the world map) are suggestions which can be varied. However, this does not mean that the purposed combinations are arbitrary. They refer, apart from the Near East, from North America, Russia and China, mainly to Europe because the cultural history that is available is mainly focused on the European culture. At the moment there aren't yet any appropriate pictures of trees growing in tropical or subtropical regions of the world, but the Banyan tree could be assigned, for exemple, to India, or the Baobab to Kenya. There is a multitude of different tree traditions in the world. Global Tree wants to combine these tree traditions in a worldwide network. Each network tree will be under the patronage of the appropriate country, which will then organize the financing and the maintenance of the tree.
